Zausmer Attorneys Volunteer at Second Chance Summit

Zausmer attorneys provided free legal aid to facilitate record expungement for Detroiters seeking a fresh start.

On March 1, 2024, nine Zausmer attorneys participated in the Second Chance Summit at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. This event enabled nearly 170 individuals to begin the process of expunging their criminal records. Zausmer’s client, the Detroit Pistons, hosted the initiative, with co-sponsorship from the National Basketball Social Justice Coalition, Safe and Just Michigan, the City of Detroit, the Michigan Attorney General’s Office, Project Clean Slate, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan. The event provided eligible individuals with free and low-cost legal assistance for clearing old criminal records under Michigan’s Clean Slate Act.

Zausmer attorneys Michael Schwartz, Richard Patton, Asma Al-Khshali, Abbes Awada, Jalese DeBiasi, John Lewsley, Talitha Mahome, Kyle Warwick, and Amber Hobbs volunteered their time and expertise, assisting eligible individuals with their applications for expungement. The event also featured a job fair that connected participants with employers and resources to support their reintegration into the workforce.

The Second Chance Summit marked a critical step in ongoing efforts to promote rehabilitative justice. It reflects Zausmer’s commitment to making a tangible difference in the community.
