Managing outside legal counsel is a skill that needs to be developed. It is a necessary step to getting the best results from your legal counsel while effectively managing your costs. To help road agencies better understand how to manage their counsel, Mischa and Devin examined the stereotypes about lawyers, how to understand lawyers’ psyches, and how to best utilize those personality traits to benefit the client. They also highlighted the importance of clearly defined expectations, including budgets, and offered innovative ideas on how to communicate with outside counsel.
