In honor of Black History Month, we will highlight the outstanding Black attorneys at our firm, beginning with Zausmer associate Shaun M.-J. Neal.
“What I think people should remember about Black history is that it is America’s history. We study history not only so we remember what happened in the past but so that we can do better in the present and the future,” said Shaun.
Shaun has been with our firm for nearly a decade and has continuously proved himself an exceptional member of our Insurance Defense team. For the past four years, Shaun has been able to get at least $1 million a year in cases dismissed.
Shaun received his undergraduate degree in English from Oberlin College. He went on to earn his law degree from the University of Michigan, where he also taught English at Jackson Community College and was awarded a prestigious Darrow Scholarship, named after former Michigan Law student Clarence Darrow, renowned as a courageous defender of human rights and perhaps the greatest trial lawyer in U.S. history.
Throughout the year, Shaun likes to engage in different charitable events. Over the past five years, he has donated blood to the Red Cross at least three times a year, has participated in the firm’s Free Bikes 4 Kids event for two years, and participates in Operation Good Cheer every year as a member of the firm.
Finding the time outside of work to be with those he loves and partake in his wide array of hobbies helps Shaun to stay young and get the motivation to keep going. As an avid collector, Shaun has collected 150 Funko Pops. He is married, has two kids, and believes staying active daily is important. Shaun enjoys biking, lifting weights, and running marathons.
Shaun shared with us his favorite quote, which is from Malcolm X: “I’m for truth, no matter who tells it. I’m for justice, no matter who it is for or against. I’m a human being, first and foremost, and as such I’m for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole.”
